Media Access Control. The MAC Address appears in the Ethernet packet header and is a unique number. Once a MAC Address has been assigned to a particular piece of hardware that device can be uniquely identified against all other devices in the world. The first six hextets of a MAC address can be used to identify the manufacturer of the hardware. An example of a MAC address appear in the format xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx. It is a 48 bit address and is expressed in Hexadecimal Notation.
